OBU Track Has Strong Showing at Texas Relays

Oklahoma Baptist's track team had a successful weekend, led by Mirriam Kaumba's stadium record at the Texas Relays.

Kaumba won the 5000 meters at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium in 16:12.6. That was the stadium record at a venue that has hosted an NCAA National Championship. She knocked off 19 NCAA Division I competitors, including runners from Texas, Kansas, Baylor, LSU, Houston, Rice, Texas A&M and Arkansas. Her mark qualified her for the NAIA National meet.

Kaumba was also on OBU's seventh-place distance medley relay team with Kyta Ferrer, Kyli Bean and Andrea Mount that finished at 11:44.43 and ahead of such teams as Texas, Stanford and Kansas.

The 4x800 squad of Ferrer, Bean, Melissa Mount and Chandra Huckabay was fifth in a NAIA qualifying time of 9:01.63.

The women's 4x400 relay team of Keyonna Hornbuckle, Melissa Mount, Ferrer and Bean finished in 3:47.48, a qualifying time.

For the men, Pat Brown was second in both the 110 high hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles. He finished the 110 in 14:01 and the 400 in 51.98. He qualified for the NAIA Meet in both events.

Brown also ran in three relays.

Brown, Clint Goodson, Stephen Nettles and Landon Willets were fourth in the sprint medley relay in 3:22.90. Brown, Goodson, Leonarde Smith and Bryce Bell were sixth in the 4x400 relay with a national qualifying time of 3:13.34.

Brown, Goodson, Smith and Nettles placed fifth in the 4x100 at 42.12.

The rest of the OBU team competed in the Ray Vaughn Track Classic at Oklahoma Christian, where two more qualifying marks were achieved.

Jeremiah Campo qualified in the shot put with a winning heave of 50-1. Sara Thurber won the 100 meter hurdles in a qualifying mark of 14.72 seconds.

Other OBU winners at the OC event were Jennifer Jenckes in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.68), Lamar Baskin in the 110 hurdles (15.08), Campo in the discus (151-9) and Michelle Carpenter in the high jump (5-2).

OBU will compete at Wichita State Saturday, April 16.
