Bison Storm Back for Invitational Win

Oklahoma Baptist University's Bison golf team made up 13 strokes on the second and final day of the OBU Invitational at Shawnee Country Club Tuesday to force and win a team playoff.

OBU's women placed third, unable to make up ground on team champion Redlands and runner-up Northwood. The Lady Bison finished at 689, a stroke behind Northwood and 14 behind Redlands.

The Bison trailed Seminole State by 13 strokes and were in third place in the tournament after the first round on Monday, but all five OBU men shot in the 70s on Tuesday and forced an extra hole with both teams tied at 615.

There, OBU had a lower score and took home the team championship plaque with 10 golfers playing the first hole.

Mark Richards and Jason Carpenter both shot 73 on Tuesday, Robert Byaruhanga shot a 77 and Russell Kern and Josh Bryan added 78s for a team score of 301, shaving 13 strokes off Monday's 314, while Seminole State added 15 strokes.

SSC's Jared Holt won the individual title at 150 with Seminole's Marco Gadarski and Mark Richards tying for second at 151. Tyler Lytton of Southwestern College in Kansas tied Carpenter for fourth at 153. Kern finished tied for sixth at 154, Bryan was 16th at 158, Byaruhanga was 25th with a 162 and Marc Johnson was 33rd with a 167.

On the women's side, Camila Sola of Redlands recorded a second round 73 to go off and leave the field and lead her team to the title as well.

Northwood hung on to its narrow lead over OBU.

Michelle Hunter led the Lady Bison at 171 in fourth place, followed by Ellen Zaske in fifth at 173, Amber McMurry in eighth at 173, Maggie Cole in ninth at 174, Jennifer Mann in 11th at 176 and Brittany Brooks in 20th at 189.

The OBU women will play in the Regional Tournament April 29-30 in San Antonio, Texas.
