Bison Go 13 Innings to Complete Sweep

Article Date

Oklahoma Baptist needed 20 innings and a workhorse effort from Tabor Woolard to claim two games from Wayland Baptist Saturday.

OBU rallied from five runs down for a 7-6 win in the opener and claimed a 5-4, 13-inning win in the second. The sweep gave OBU the series 3-1, moving the Bison into third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Woolard pitched the last three innings of the opener to pick up the victory and then tossed the last six games of the nightcap, scattering four hits, to pick up the win in the second game as well. Woolard, who became OBU's closer this week, ended the week with two wins and two saves, allowing no runs in 13.1 innings.

The Pioneers used three singles, three walks, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly to build a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the twin bill.

Adam Dalby singled home Kip Keith in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Bison erupted for five runs in the third on an RBI double by Frankie Ibarra, a two-run double by Felix Peguero, and RBI single by Eric Curry and a bases loaded walk by Keith. The rally put OBU ahead 6-5.

Wayland Baptist tied the game when Jorge Rubio singled, stole second and scored on two wild pitches.

Woolard checked the Pioneers on two hits in the last three innings.

The Bison scored the go-ahead run in the fifth when Aaron Dickson reached on a fielders choice, stole second and scored on an error.

In the second game, Wayland Baptist took a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Brad Wuensche and an RBI single by Rubio in the third inning.

The Bison got three runs for a 3-2 lead in the third with a two-run single by Peguero and a wild pitch.

Lucio Castro singled in one run and Brett Dunlap lifted a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 WBU lead in the fourth.

OBU tied the game in the sixth when Peguero doubled and scored on a two-base hit by Rett Terrell.

Neither team scored until the game ended in the 13th, but not before the Pioneers threatened in the top of that inning. With runners at first and third and one out, Woolard struck out Rubio and got Chasen DeLeon on a come-backer.

Danny Guidry was hit by a pitch with one out. Guidry was moving on the 1-2 pitch to Peguero and Peguero doubled to left center, allowing Guidry to score easily.

With the series win, OBU moved to 14-10 in the SAC and 38-18 overall. OBU will close out the regular season next week with four one-game dates with St. Gregory's.
