Oklahoma Baptist University apparently has begun a tradition of high-scoring season openers, starting the 2005 campaign with an 11-1 rout of Ozark Christian in Joplin, Mo., Monday.

The Bison, who opened 2004 with a 20-0 win over Southwest Christian, got two goals each from Fabio Pires, Rafael Heck and Marcos Silva, along with a hat trick by Pablo Campos.

Cesar Silva, whose brother Thiago scored last season's historic first goal of the season, had the honors of breaking the scoreless tie in the season opener this year in the sixth minute. Pires had the first of his three assists in the game.

Campos then scored two minutes later with a double assist from Pires and Heck. Heck put one in goal in the 14th minute off a dual feed from Campos and Nickson Odeny.

Campos fed Pires for a goal in the 20th minute for a for a 4-0 lead.

Eduardo Acedo got the ball ahead to Campos for a 5-0 lead in the 26th minute and Heck scored with an assist from Pires in the 28th minute.

Campos recorded his third goal with an assist from Odeny. Odeny and Marcos Silva scored in the 35th and 40th minute, respectively, with assists from Pires and Elijah Mwansanga.

Taizo Kasuya put OBU into double figures in the 50th minute and then got the assist on a second Marcos Silva goal for the final margin.

"We were a little nervous at first, but after we started kicking the ball around a little bit we settled in," said OBU coach Marcelo Galvao. "It was a good match for us."

OBU's men and women will head to Laredo, Texas, for games at Texas A&M International on Friday. TAMUI ended the Bison's season in the Regional Tournament last season.

OBU's 11-goal performance tied last year's 11 goals against the same OCC squad for the second-best output in a single game.

After the game, OBU and Ozark Christian shared an opportunity in sports ministry in a prayer and testimony time.
