Dr. Tom Wilks, Huitt professor of applied ministry and director of in-service guidance at Oklahoma Baptist University, was recently presented the Lewis W. Newman Award from the North American Mission Board on recognition of his leadership in In-Service Guidance.
Wilks, who has served on the OBU faculty for 25 years, was the 11th recipient of the award, which is named after the founder of the In-Service Guidance Association for Baptist Colleges and Seminaries. The association was founded in 1959.
Wilks coordinates practical ministry experience opportunities for OBU students preparing for careers in full-time Christian service.
"What makes this award special is that it is voted by my peers," said Wilks. "Since it has been given only 10 other times, I am honored to be among the recipients, which include Bill Neptune (former OBU provost) and Bill Tanner (former OBU president)."
Wilks received the award during the ISGA's annual meeting at Mississippi College in August. The award is offered to beneficiaries that demonstrate "excellence in directing field supervisioin programs, training supervisors, guiding students and providing leadership to the In-Service Guidance Association."
