Haselwood-McNutt Take Consolation Title

Sarah Haselwood and Kerri McNutt claimed the women's consolation doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Division Region Championships on Saturday.

Haselwood and McNutt defeated Brooke Ruder and Elise McKamie of Southern Nazarene in the championship, 8-3.

Larikah Russell and Isabella Bauer of SNU won the doubles championship in an 8-5 decision over Jennifer Le and Audrey Donovan of Oklahoma Christian.

In women's singles, top-seeded Larika Russell of Southern Nazarene scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the finals over teammate and third-seeded Isabella Bauer.

Haselwood was eliminated Saturday in the quarterfinals by Le, the fourth-seed, 6-1, 6-2.

Audrey Donovan of Oklahoma Christian captured the singles consolation title with an 8-1 win over Tarryn DeSouza of Oklahoma Christian.

In men's doubles, the No. 1 seed, Andre Bergemann and Ricardo Omana of College of Santa Fe, knocked off their teammate, Anibal Aranda and Daniel Scholten, 8-6 in the championship round.

In the men's consolation singles semifinals, Tyson Allard eluded his OBU teammate, Jordan Wacker, 8-2, to reach the finals. Aranda, who was seeded second but was upset in the first round, claimed the consolation title over Allard, 8-4.

Omana won the singles championship, despite not winning a complete set in the finals. Bergemann won the first set 6-3, but was injured and retired with Omana leading 3-0 in the second set.

On the first day of the tournament, Peter McCorkle of OBU scored the second-biggest upset of the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's regional tournament in Shawnee Friday.

McCorkle knocked off Aranda of the College of Santa Fe, 7-5, 7-5, in the first round of men's singles action. Aranda is ranked 15th in the NAIA.

The biggest surprise also came in the first round as Oklahoma Wesleyan's Bruno Seves upset second-seeded Scholten of Santa Fe, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Scholten is ranked 12th in the nation.

McCorkle fell in the second round to Omano, who won the national ITA title last season, 7-5, 7-5.

In other OBU action, Wacker lost his first round match to Travis Truax of Oklahoma Christian, 7-6 (6-4), 1-6, 10-4, and fourth-seed Juraj Sekera of Oklahoma Christian defeated Allard, 6-2, 6-2.

Wacker defeated Ryan Stephenson of Oklahoma Chrtistian, 6-4, 4-6, 12-10, and Allard defeated Jake Keeling of OWU, 6-3, 6-3.

In men's doubles, Allard-Wacker lost in the first round to Keeling-Seves of OWU, 8-4, and lost by the same score in the consolation round to Stephenson-Martinez of OC. McCorkle and Andrew Sharp rebounded from an 8-4 loss to Sekera-Viljoen of OC, for an 8-2 win over Ferguson-Truax of OC. The tandem lost in the consolation finals to Stephenson-Martinez, 8-4.

In women's singles, Haselwood scored an OBU win over Larissa Anson of Southern Nazarene, 6-0, 6-0, and topped Audrey Donovan of OC in the second round, 6-4, 6-4.

McNutt of OBU knocked off SNU's Ruder, 6-4, 6-2, but lost in the second round to second seed Dasha Ivanova, 6-0, 6-0.
