Akin Recognized for Commitment to Education

Article Date

Dr. Jeanne Akin, Oklahoma Baptist University associate professor of teacher education, was awarded Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Shawnee Conservation District at the 2005 Achievements in Conservation awards ceremony which was held on Sept. 8, 2005 during the Pottawatomie County Fair.

Akin was chosen as Outstanding Educator of the Year for her dedication to inspire her students to do their best.

Her students have planned and taught lessons for children who visit the Shawnee Outdoor Learning Center. It is said that the children enjoy the activities so much that they hardly realize that they are learning social studies, science, language arts and math skills.

The children of the Shawnee community have benefited greatly due to Akin's enthusiastic approach to teaching, as well as the cooperation between OBU, the Shawnee Conservation District, and area schools.

Akin received her bachelor's degree from Southern Nazarene University, her master's degree in education from University of Central Oklahoma and her doctorate of education degree from Oklahoma State University. Akin has taught at OBU for the past seven years.
