Dr. David Bebbington, religious scholar and professor of history at University of Stirling, Scotland, will visit Oklahoma Baptist University, Oct. 17-19, making five speaking appearances on the Shawnee, Okla., campus.
Bebbington comes as part of OBU's Distinguished Speakers Committee, presenting his lecture on "The Roots of the Northern Ireland Problem" on Monday, Oct. 17, at 3:45 p.m., in the upper level of the Geiger Center. He will address "Evangelical Theology in the English-Speaking World" on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., in Bailey Business Center Auditorium. Bebbington also will speak in two classes on Oct. 18.
His visit will conclude with an appearance in OBU's weekly Chapel service Wednesday, at 10 a.m. He will speak about the History and Government window in Raley Chapel as part of the Stained Glass Series.
Since 1976, Bebbington has been a member of the history department of University of Stirling. He also taught at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Notre Dame University and Baylor University.
Bebbington recently published a study of The Mind of Gladstone, encompassing the theological, classical and political thought of the British Victorian Prime Minister, and has completed a book on global English-speaking evangelism in the later nineteenth century.
His previous works include Patterns in History, The Baptists in Scotland and Modern Christianity and Cultural Aspirations.
The Distinguished Speakers Committee formed in 2004 as a student initiative. The nine-member student committee is committed to bring nationally- and internationally-known speakers to the OBU campus for co-curricular academic discourse.
