Oklahoma Baptist University's Lady Bison dropped their shot at their first Sooner Athletic Conference soccer championship Tuesday before the men's squad salvaged a split in a doubleheader with visiting John Brown.
The Lady Bison, with a win, would have forged a three-way tie atop the SAC standings and would have had the tiebreaker on both John Brown and Oklahoma City. However, with the 2-0 victory over OBU, John Brown claimed sole possession of the 2005 regular season title.
The Bison won the men's game 3-0 to seal second place in the SAC standings.
The SAC Tournament begins at home sites of the upper-seeded teams this weekend. The Lady Bison will host a game at 2 p.m. Friday and the Bison will play at home at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
OBU's men scored the only goal in the first half on a Pablo Campos penalty kick in the 23rd minute after being dragged down from behind in the box.
The score remained 1-0 until the 87th minute when Cesar Silva knocked home a goal off a feed from Marcos Silva. The Bison picked up some Longo rating points with 2:18 left in the game as Adauto Oliveira scored with assists from Campos and Marcos Silva.
Joao Acedo picked up the shut-out victory with six saves. It was his sixth shut-out of the season.
The Lady Bison fell behind 1-0 on a goal from Kendra Rehner with an assist from Nikki Ganter in the 38th minute.
OBU missed a chance to tie late in the first half when Hilary Hendrickson's shot bounced off the left post and off the mark.
Ganter scored in the 49th minute with a double assist from Stacie and Sharon Burley.
