Senior Inspired by God’s Glory

March 29, 2010

Jessica Herbert, an Oklahoma Baptist University senior art major, finds inspiration in the relationships and nature that God provides for her each day. Herbert, a 22-year-old student from Greenville, Texas, is showcasing her artwork in the on-campus Art Division Gallery from March 26- April 4.

"I am inspired by the ones I love and those who bless me with their friendship," Herbert said. "Everywhere I turn God's glory is seen through His sunsets or the relationships around me."

OBU is hosting a series of senior art shows throughout the spring semester depicting each artist's favorite pieces in accordance with their chosen theme. The theme of Herbert's show is "What a Beautiful Story God is Painting in Our Lives."

Herbert did not begin studying art until four years ago when she enrolled at OBU. Prior to her arrival on campus, Herbert learned about art from her mother, who is also an artist. Stained glass is one medium Herbert used in her show as displayed in the lamp at the entrance of her gallery work.

"This medium is very different from any other kind of art I have worked with and is one of my favorites," Herbert said.

The central piece of her show is inspired by a photo taken by her sister who teaches in China. The title of the piece is "His City." Herbert used oil paint to recreate the image in the photo.

Following graduation, Herbert hopes to work with art full time.

"I hope to share my love of art with others surrounding me," Herbert said.
